Monica Martinez is hosting an online trunk show for Stella and Dot, offering a rich variety of fashion accessories for women and girls. Monica’s daughter was a performer in the recent musical production of “Annie,” which was also a fundraiser for Laurin. When she heard about the need, she teamed up with stylist Lori Nisimblat to create this unique benefit for Laurin. Lori had a cousin who took dance at Melba’s Dance School and knew she wanted to help. Her cousin? Broadway performer Gaby Ruiz, who has taught several master classes at Melba’s.

Laurin in the Spotlight at Closing Performance of “Annie”

When choreographer and Melba’s Dance School director Julie Doyle came onstage prior to the opening curtain of “Annie” Sunday evening in McAllen, she announced that this performance was dedicated to Laurin Huber and that all four performances were to help raise money for Laurin’s medical needs. The sold-out audience of 500 broke into enthusiastic applause as a spotlight suddenly beamed down on Laurin.

It was a fun, though rare, moment for Laurin, who seldom gets out of the house. A special effort was made for this event. Laurin’s mom (Melba) and two of her nurses (Carmen and Elvia) got her into her wheelchair and loaded her into the lift-equipped van for an afternoon at the matinee!

Laurin was absolutely riveted by the delightful show produced by All Star Theatre and Melba’s Dance School. She was enjoying it so much that she had little patience for the distractions of the nurse trying to make her more comfortable! She had no problems despite being off her oxygen for several hours. After the show, Laurin got to go onstage for a meet-and-greet with the cast.
Laurin enjoys a moment onstage with the full cast and crew of Annie, who dedicated the show to her. Four performances were given, all benefitting the We Love Laurin Special Needs Trust.

We are waiting to learn the final total of how much this event raised for the We Love Laurin Special Needs Trust. We do know it’s at least $8,000, all from sales of $10 tickets! So it looks like the “Annie” ticket sales alone will provide enough for about a month of Laurin’s medical expenses. These fundraisers are so important for Laurin’s future. We’d love to hear from anybody who has ideas for future fundraising events.

Thank you to all the cast, crew and audience of Annie for your amazing support!

Kickstart at the Recital

The We Love Laurin Special Needs Trust and website have officially been unveiled. On May 10, a team of volunteers made a special presentation prior to intermission at each of two Melba’s Dance School recitals. After we played a short video (the same one you can see here on the About Laurin page), Edna DeSaro, a distinguished Melba’s Dance alum, came onstage. She poignantly expressed her compassion over Laurin’s situation and her passion that Melba’s Dance School would continue for future generations. She presented a personal check to “kickstart” the giving and referred people to the We Love Laurin tables in the foyer.

I think perhaps many were surprised to learn that Melba has cared for her daughter’s extreme needs for 34 years. At 86 years old, she also oversees care of her own mother, who turned 105 today. But Melba is not a complainer. Her strength and positivity completely eclipse the pain to the people she sees each day. She lovingly pours herself into Melba’s Dance School, nurturing and encouraging each new generation that comes through her school. This is truly her “life’s work,” and many of her former students have affirmed over the years how important it was in their lives.

The reaction was positive and supportive. People opened their hearts and gave cash and checks right there at the recital. So far, gifts have ranged from $1 to $5000. Contributions of any size are greatly appreciated. Perhaps the most touching donations were from some little girls who gave their own allowances to help Laurin. Altogether, the trust has already received $6,655, which is enough to pay for about a month of Laurin’s nursing expenses!

Besides numerous anonymous donors, the following people have given gifts to Laurin’s trust: Dr. Dani Talamantez of Star Chiropractic, Edna DeSaro, Sharon Waite, Linda Eason, Guillermo Garcias Jr. of AW Electric, Gary and Bailey Gurwitz, Gaines and Carldene Garland, Rebecca Rios, Homer H. Scott of 5125 Company and Andrea Garcia.

This weekend, don’t miss the musical “Annie.” Tickets are just $10 each and will benefit the We Love Laurin Special Needs Trust. A number of Melba’s Dance School students will be playing roles in this show. Performances are at Nikki Rowe High School (2101 N. Ware Road in McAllen) on Friday, May 16 at 7:30pm, Saturday, May 17 at 2:00pm and 7:30pm and Sunday, May 18 at 2:00pm. Let’s make sure “the sun’ll come out tomorrow” for Laurin!
